On Sunday, June 10, 2012, I am participating in Walk to Fight Arthritis 5km walk in Burlington. For those that know me well, this is going to take some preparing - good thing I have almost 6 months to get ready for it!
In early 2011 I learned that I have osteoarthritis with osteophytes (bone spurs) on my hip, apparently the underlying reason for my ongoing hip problems for more than the last 3 years, since a muscle injury 6 months before turning 40.
My mom has had osteoarthritis since a similar age. My cousin was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in her 30s (more aggressive than osteoarthritis). I'm sure others in my family that I'm not aware of have or had it, and probably some of you as well.
It seems like "arthritis" is a common and non-terrifying ailment, but it's amazing how much it changes your quality of life, daily routine and what you can actually do (moreover, not do). For me, walking up stairs hurts, going for a walk with the dog hurts, and even sleeping hurts. I'm not a senior, I'm only 43. I never thought I'd feel this old at this age. Activity, therapy, medication, and surgery are the options for me and others with arthritis, but currently there is no cure.
All these cost money - I'm blessed to have good health benefits through my job that cover much of the therapy I get, but not all arthritis sufferers are so fortunate, especially seniors. I am walking and raising donations to support nearly 4.5 million Canadians, including myself, who live with the pain and disability caused by arthritis.
